Sometimes it came from a man who recognized what his own choices had helped build and decided, when it mattered most, that he would no longer obey. This episode tells the story of Dimitar Peshev.
He supported Bulgaria’s alliance with Germany, backed anti-Jewish laws, and believed in the government that joined itself to Hitler’s war. But when that same system prepared to send Bulgaria’s Jews to their deaths, Peshev stood against it. He could not undo every wrong choice he had made. But he used the power he still possessed to help save nearly 50,000 lives.
