It is no secret the grim conditions political prisoners face at the hands of the Iranian Regime. The individual stories of the severe injustices they face are a daily occurrence and many are in need of immediate, urgent assistance.
One such story is of Afishin Sohrabzadeh, 24, a member of Iran’s Kurdish minority is serving a 25 year prison sentence in “internal exile” at a remote prison in southern Hormozgan province; Minab Prison. He is in urgent need of specialized medical treatment that is unavailable within the prison. He currently is battling colon cancer along with a long list of other ongoing health complications including bleeding and upper repertory problems. His condition is so severe he has been vomiting blood. Sohrabzadeh was transferred to a hospital outside the prison but has been forced by Minab prison authorities to return twice without treatment in spite of the doctor’s opinion he stays and receive treatment.
However doctor’s opinions do little to move Iranian authorities into action and his pleas for medical attention go ignored. Mr. Sohabzadeh was unable to obtain health insurance because at the time of his arrest all of his identification was confiscated. His family has offered bail money multiple times to have him released to receive the care he desperately needs but prison authorities have refused them.
Human Rights groups are calling on the Iranian authorities to authorize the immediate specialized medical treatment outside prison and free of change in line with international standards for Afshin Sohrabzadeh as well as for his prompt and unconditional release and that all illegal charges against him be dropped.
Sohrabzaden, in the past has been very outspoken to human rights groups regarding the “deplorable conditions” of Minab Prison. Denying him these demands as he is faced with the possibility of death is an utter travesty.
Please sign the petition and demand that the Iranian government acts within the framework of the UN’s international human rights treaties, and human values to provide him full and immediate medical furlough before he is provide with a fair trial based on the rule of law.
